Spotters Nexus Mirror Sunglasses
When sunlight hits a reflective flat surfaces such as the ocean, the reflected light becomes partially polarised and creates glare. This is the principal reason why good quality polarised sunglasses are an essential item for sea kayaking.
My preferred sunglasses are the "Spotters Nexus Mirror" sunglasses set on the "Cristo" frames. The lenses consist of a polarising filter and a reflective mirror layer laminated between precision ground crown glass layers.
The lens has an iridescent blue/green mirrored appearance when viewed from the exterior and an emerald green base tint when looking through the lens. The base tint has a wavelength specifically set at 555 nanometres – the precise point in the visible spectrum where the human eye best perceives light and colour during daylight conditions.
The Cristo frames have a gloss black finish and are made from an amorphous thermoplastic that retains its shape well. They feature a tight wrap around lens style which covers your full periphery vision. Heavy duty hinges with stainless steel screws secure the spring loaded arms.
Conclusion
The optical clarity of the lenses is superb and they provide excellent glare reduction. Underwater vision is also greatly enhanced. The frame has a solid, well constructed feel and comfortable fit. The tight wrap around style does promote lens fogging on hot still days.
A good pair of sunglasses is likely to be on the expensive side, so be sure to secure them properly.
