Picnic Bay

Picnic Bay is a small  bay on the south-east corner of Magnetic Island.  It is located approximately 7.03 km from the Palleranda Boat ramp or 8.23 km from the Strand Beach launch site and has the following GPS coordinates  S19 10 49.4  E146 50 16.3   Google Maps Link
              

Picnic Bay was the original landing site for ferry services from the mainland.  In 2003 the passenger ferries ceased operating at Picnic Bay,  but the heritage listed jetty still remains.  The jetty is in a fairly good state of repair and is a prominent feature within the bay.


The jetty is located at the western end of the bay, along side the surf lifesaving club and the stinger net enclosure.  There is a also a single lane boat ramp next to the jetty and a large sandy beach area perfect for landing a kayak.



There are small scattered sections of reef  surrounding the area, which are visible as you glide over them on a calm day.  At certain times, large schools of sardines congregate around the jetty, attracting larger predatory fish.  I have seen fishermen landing several large Queen fish during such times.

As the name would suggest, Picnic Bay features an abundance of well shaded, picnic and BBQ areas, set among landscaped gardens with picturesque views across the ocean towards Townsville.  There is also a pub, restaurant and a few cafes located close by.

I regularly paddle from Townsville to Picnic Bay and enjoy having breakfast and a swim in idealic surrounds before heading back.

Yanks Jetty

Yanks Jetty is the name given to a floating pontoon positioned approximately 2km from the southern tip of Orpheus Island.   This area was the original site of an American WW2 Degaussing (demagnetising) Station for allied ships and submarines, hence the name.  It is located approximately 20.5 km from the Forrest  Beach Boat Ramp and has the following GPS coordinates  S18 39 04.2 E146 29 12.0  Google Maps Link. Despite their relatively small size, a sea kayak can carry an amazing amount of gear. One of the big draws of sea kayaking is that you can go and explore some of the most beautiful, wild and remote parts of the coast, for days or even weeks at a time and still live in relative comfort. The good thing about packing a sea kayak is that there are three hatches to stuff full of gear and there will usually be enough free space to pack a few luxuries (a little extra weight will still float just fine).
